BUCS Discipline Plan 2007

 

BUCS STUDENT BEHAVIOR AND DISCIPLINE PLAN

             Students are expected to conduct themselves in a manner which allows both the student and his/her classmates the opportunity to learn Southside has adopted a discipline plan designed to set clear expectations and consequences.  The plan also includes rewards for those students who do an exemplary job of following school rules.   General discipline information, school expectations, rules, progression of discipline for minor violations, definitions of problem behaviors, and rewards are included in this handbook for your information.

               General Discipline Information

               1Students may be suspended for rude and disrespectful behavior toward teachers, staff, or    principal.

2.     Fighting or provoking fights will not be tolerated.  Students who provoke or participate in a fight on the school grounds or on a school bus will be subject to disciplinary measures.

3.     Harassment of any kind will not be tolerated.  Students who continually  harass other students will be subject to disciplinary measures.

2.      Students who bring knives, razor blades, matches, cigarette lighters, or other potential weapons or actual weapons will be subject to disciplinary measures (possible expulsion).

3.      Those parents who do not wish their child to be paddled need to put this in writing and deliver the note to the office in person.  In lieu of paddling, a student may be suspended.

4.      Students who bring or are in possession of any type of tobacco, alcoholic beverage, or medicine on campus will be subject to disciplinary measures (possible expulsion).

5.      Students may not run in the halls, classrooms, bathrooms, cafeteria, carpool area, or bus area.

6.      Students may not play fight or wrestle.

7.      Students may not play under the wooden playground equipment and may not run in the gravel area around the equipment. 

8.      Students are to keep their hands and feet to themselves.

9.      No footballs are to be brought to school.

10.   Students are not to bring any items to school other than those items the teacher has given specific permission for them to bring.  Radios, makeup, jam boxes, headphones, cassette players, electronic games, trading cards, toys, etc. are not to be brought to school.  Students may bring such items only if the teacher has given special permission.

11.   Students are not to trade or sell  items at school.

12.   Students are to not to chew gum at school or bring gum to school unless they have special permission from their teacher.

13.   Students are not to bring cell phones to school.  If brought, they will be taken away and returned to parent.

14.   Students who habitually violate school or classroom rules may be suspended.

15.   Disciplinary measures include conferences with the student and/or the parent, removal of the student from activities, written punish-work, loss of recess(es), corporal punishment, suspension, and expulsion.

16.   The Livingston Parish School Board Policy Manual provides more information concerning student discipline and student’s rights to a hearing and appeal when suspension or expulsion has occurred.

17.   Students not in compliance with the School Uniform Policy shall be disciplined as follows:

                                                              i.     1st Offense - Parent/Guardian contact

                                                             ii.     2nd Offense - Administrative/Parent verbal contact

                                                           iii.     3rd Offense - Detention

                                                            iv.     4th Offense - One day out of school suspension for each offense

1.  Run in designated areas only (K/1-by fence, 2-5 grass only).

2.  Freeze when the bell rings and line up quietly when the whistle blows.

 

 

1.  Turn off the water after washing your hands.

2.  Use the bathroom quickly and quietly, then come right out.

3.  Stay in bathroom until both partners finish. 

 

1.  Be on time at your stop, and behave while you wait.

2.  Walk quickly to the bus to enter.

3.  Have written permission approved by the office to get on or off at a different stop or to go home a different way.

 

COOPERATE

 

1.  Do your part to keep your area clean.

2.  Help others when needed.

 

 

1.  Maintain your “bubble” (your personal space), and stay out of the personal space of others.

2. Walk without talking.

 

1.  Play fairly; compromise.

2.  Accept and include everyone.

 

1.  Report serious problems to the teacher.

2.  Keep the restroom clean.

 

1.  Sit QUIETLY with  your back against your seat and behave so as not to distract the driver.

STAY SAFE

 

1.  Stay in line without talking facing forward.

2.  Hold your tray with two hands.

3. Use utensils properly.

 

1.  Walk in line facing forward.

2.  Put your book sack and other items against the wall.

 

 

1.  Use equipment properly.

2.  Walk out to recess in an orderly manner.

3.  Walk in from recess in a line without talking, facing forward.

 

1.  Use bathroom equipment and supplies appropriately.

2.  Use caution if the floors are wet.

 

1.  Keep all food, pencils, and other items in your book sack.

2.  Always cross in front of the bus, never behind it.

3. Go home after you leave the bus.

Classroom rules are posted in each classroom. 

Progression of Discipline for Continuous Violation of BUCS’ Expectations and Rules 

For minor violations of BUCS’ expectations and rules, the following procedure is used:

  1. Warning—reminder of expectations
  2. Behavior Assignment--Write expectation and rule ___ times (grade level times 2).  For homework if not completed at recess.
  3. Behavior Assignment--Write expectation and rule ___ times (grade level times 5) . For homework if not completed at recess.
  4. Assign Classroom Behavior Improvement Form to complete and have signed by parent.  If not returned the next day completed and signed by parent, the student will start on #2. If not returned the next day completed and signed by parent, the student will start on #3 and the teacher will call the parents.
  5. Send to the office for Principal’s Office Behavior Improvement Form

If the student receives a 3rd Principal's Office Behavior Improvement Form, a parent conference will be required.

If the student receives a 4th Principal’s Office Behavior Improvement Form, the student will serve an in-school suspension.

If the student receives a 5th Principal’s Office Behavior Improvement Form, the student will serve an out-of-school suspension.

If the violations continue after the out-of-school suspension, the consequences of parent conference, in-school suspension, and out-of-school suspension will be repeated. 

This progression will start over at the beginning of each semester

For major or severe violations, the student will be sent directly to the office. 

DEFINITIONS OF PROBLEM BEHAVIORS 

Minor Problem Behaviors include low intensity problem behaviors that are violations of behavioral expectations and rules but are not of sufficient intensity to warrant an office discipline referral.  They are to be addressed using the procedure above.  They include:

Inappropriate Verbal Language—Low-intensity instance of inappropriate language

Physical Contact—Not serious, but inappropriate physical contact

Defiance/disrespect/Non-compliance—Brief or low-intensity failure to respond to adult requests

Disruption—Low –intensity, but inappropriate disruption

Property Misuse—Low-intensity misuse of property

Other—Any other minor behaviors that do not fall within the above categories

Major Problem Behaviors will result in an office referral.  They include:

Abusive/Inappropriate Language/Profanity—Verbal message that includes swearing, name calling or use of words in an inappropriate way.

Alcohol—Student is in possession of or is using alcohol.

Arson—Student plans and/or participates in malicious burning of property.

Bomb Threat/False alarm—Student delivers a message of possible explosive materials being on campus, near campus, and/or pending explosion.

Combustibles—Student is in possession of substances/objects readily capable of causing bodily harm and/or property damage (matches, lighter, firecrackers, gasoline/lighter fluid).

Defiance/disrespect/insubordination/non-compliance—Refusal to follow directions, talking back and/or socially rude interactions.

Disruption—Behavior causing a major interruption in class or activity.  Disruption includes sustained loud talking, yelling, or screaming; noise with materials; horseplay or rough-housing; and/or sustained out-of-seat behavior.

Dress Code Violation—Student continues to wear clothing that does not fit within the dress code guidelines practiced by the school district after parental contact has been made by the administration and/or teacher.

Fighting/physical aggression—Actions involving serious physical contact where injury may occur (hitting, punching, hitting with an object, kicking, hair pulling, scratching, etc.)

Forgery/theft—Student is in possession of, having passed on, or being responsible for removing someone else’s property or has signed a persons name without that person’s permission.  For K-1, major only if multiple forgeries after parental contact by teacher.

Harassment/teasing/taunting—Student delivers disrespectful message (verbal or gestural) to another person that include threats and intimidation; obscene gestures, pictures, or written words.

Lying/Cheating—Student delivers message that is untrue and/or deliberately violates rules

Other—Problem behavior causing a referral that is not listed here.  Staff using this must  specify the problem behavior observed.

Other Drugs—Student is in possession of or is using illegal drugs/substances or imitations.

Property Damage—Student deliberately impairs the usefulness of property.

Skip class/truancy—Student leaves class/school without permission or stays out of class/school without permission

Tardy—Student is late to class or the start up of the school day.

Tobacco—Student is in possession of or is using tobacco.

Vandalism/Property Damage—Student participates in an activity that results in substantial destruction or disfigurement of property.

Weapons—Student is in possession of knives or guns (real or look alike), or objects readily capable of causing bodily harm.

 

               BUCS’ REWARDS  

               Weekly

Every Friday, students with no marks on chart get extra five minutes for second recess.  They will go out at 12:15.    

               Monthly

Last Friday of the month will be BUCS’ Treasure Day—BUCS’ Treasure tokens will be filled out by school employees throughout the month for students who are doing the right things based on our expectations and rules.  These will be put in treasure boxes located throughout the school.  On the Wednesday before the last Friday of the month, students will bring home a form so parents can help students choose their rewards.   The BUCS’ Treasures can be used as follows:  

BUCS’ Treasures

5 tokens   Homework Pass—teacher decides how it can be used

4 tokens   Wear non-uniform shoes/socks on BUCS’ Treasure Day

6 tokens   Wear non-uniform shirt on BUCS’ Treasure Day

15 tokens  Wear all non-uniform clothes and shoes on BUCS’ Treasure Day

Acceptable for Treasure Store Purchases. Items will be priced based on BUCS’ Treasures tokens only—no money allowed.              

Grade Level Rewards

               Each grade level will reward students who qualify by following school expectations and rules.  Teachers  will explain the reward system to the students.

               Every nine weeks

Principal’s Treasure Trove—Students from each class who have the fewest number of marks for the entire nine weeks will meet with the principal to celebrate by enjoying a snack and drink. If there are students tied with the same number, they will all attend.    

 

             ***
